Green Policy
On
Wednesday 21st January 2009, the four star Hillgrove Hotel, Leisure
& Spa in Monaghan was awarded with the “National Green
Hospitality Award”
by Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Michael
Kitt.
The
award acknowledges the Hotels continued investment, monitoring
and reducing its energy levels in all areas of the hotel. This
includes reductions in Landfill, energy usage, water usage, waste
disposal and CO2 emissions. The Hillgrove Hotel is the only Hotel
in Ireland to have all its water heated from a biomass boiler
with Zero carbon emissions.
The Minister said the Award is a result of continued financial
investment and an investment of time, environmental awareness,
staff training and energy monitoring. All of which resulted in
reductions in landfill, water usage, waste and energy usage thus
reducing the Hotel’s impact on the environment. The Hillgrove
Hotel reduced its energy usage by 15%, water usage by 20% and
waste by 20 tonnes in 2008.
Mr Colm Herron, Proprietor of the Hillgrove Hotel says “the
award demonstrates that taking measures to reduce your environmental
impact, need not be seen a burden or threat to business, but can
be viewed as an opportunity to reduce operating costs and increase
competitiveness while contributing to the challenge of protecting
our environment”.
